Sembcorp Wins Major Contract with World’s Largest Privately Owned Oil Company
3rd August 2005
Advanced technology developed by SembSolutions, a leading engineering solutions business, is helping Exxon Mobil - the world’s largest privately-owned oil company - enhance the safe operation of its extensive network of underground pipelines.
SembSolutions, part of Sembcorp Utilities UK, the Wilton International based utilities and services company, has signed a major contract with Esso Petroleum Company Limited - an ExxonMobil subsidiary - for the utilisation of its Geographical Information System (GIS).
GIS is a computer based information system that allows for pinpoint analysis of pipelines and other assets from any PC connected to the Internet.
Esso has around 1,200 miles of buried pipelines transporting a range of fuels throughout England and Wales and the company initially intends to use the system as part of its emergency response planning.
Sembcorp already uses GIS to manage its own pipelines infrastructure on Teesside and the company has also adapted it to help its on-site fire and spill protection teams respond more effectively to emergencies.
Ross Coulman, IT Projects and Growth and Business Development manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious contract with Esso and hope it will be the beginning of an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship."
“We believe that this is leading the way in terms of the application and development of IT solutions to meet today’s ‘best practice’ standards for fuel operators throughout the UK.”
SembSolutions won the Esso contract against other GIS providers after two years of effort from a dedicated GIS team within the business.
