Sembcorp UK is the powerhouse of the one of the country’s most important manufacturing sites.

The Utilities business controls the assets that supply critical products - predominantly steam and electrical power, but also water and industrial gas - to chemical companies and other manufacturers on the near 2,000 acre Wilton International site.

Utilities works in close partnership with its customers including international chemical manufacturers SABIC, INVISTA, Huntsman, Artenius, Dow and Croda - each operating high-quality, multi-million pound plant assets.

The main asset Wilton Power Station – is a 194MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant capable of producing up to 600 tonnes of steam an hour. Wilton Water Treatment Plant supplies up to 2,000 cubic metres of demineralised water an hour (making it the largest demineralised water facility in the UK). Utilities is also in charge of cable and pipe work distribution systems for electricity, steam, compressed air, nitrogen and water.

Reliability and Flexibility

The services provided by the Utilities business are integral to the success of its customers and reliability combined with fuel flexibility are at the heart of operations. Wilton Power Station is one of the most efficient units of its type in the world. By effectively ‘recycling’ the steam generated within its boilers and distributing it to customers for process use, the plant has a fuel efficiency rating of 70 per cent versus the industry average of 40 per cent. This has resulted in a saving of around 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) emissions over the course of its lifetime.

Investing in a Green Future

Sembcorp has spent around £150 million uprating existing assets and building new facilities since taking ownership of the business in 2003.

Much of this investment has been in green technology and the company took the pioneering decision to invest in the UK’s first large scale ‘wood to energy’ plant – the Sembcorp Biomass Power Station – to enhance its operations. This came online in 2007.

It has also built a new Gas Turbine/Heat Recovery Steam Generator CHP unit to supply the Ensus ‘green fuel’ bioethanol facility at Wilton and four new package boilers to respond to steam demand peaks on the rapidly expanding site.
